Michael Harper, Simon Fraser University lost its home opener to rival Central Washington, 94-82, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at the West Gym.
Central Washington out-scored the Clan 16 to eight over the final five minutes to spoil SFU's home opener after the Clan had clawed back from a 47-38 halftime deficit.
Trailing 78-74 with 5:07 to play, Central Washington went on an 11-5 run to build a 10-point lead, 89-79, with 1:09 left to seal the victory.
Simon Fraser got to within two points of CWU twice in the second half.
Central Washington led by as many as 14 points in the first half building a 47-38 halftime lead after shooting 58.3 percent from the field (21 of 36). But CWU only outscored the Clan 47-44 in the second half.
Junior transfer
Max Barkeley filled up the stat sheet. He went 7-of-21 from the field to score 22 points, pulled down eight rebounds and dished out four assists playing all 40 minutes for the Clan. Senior
Michael Harper added 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting while freshman Oshea Geary had 16 points and sophomore
JJ Pankratz scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting and pulled down 11 boards.
Simon Fraser shot 39.3% from the 3-point line going 11 of 28.
The Wildcats shot 55% (38-69) from the field and scored 62 points in the paint.
SFU out-rebounded CWU 45-38 but had 10 more turnovers. The Wildcats turned the Clan's 18 turnovers into 22 points.
Simon Fraser got just nine points from its bench while the Wildcats got 20 from its reserves.
Up next, the Clan will play a home game on Tuesday against Douglas College in the West Gym followed by a pair of home games against Colorado Christian University on Nov. 20 (7 PM) and Nov. 21 (5 PM).
