BURNABY, B.C. – Clan student-athletes are asking the Simon Fraser University community and their fans to donate gently-used clothing and athletic gear to help those families in need through its annual clothing drive.
 
The clothing drive is being organized by members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and student-athletes will be at the West Gym on Friday, Nov. 27 between noon and 4:30 PM to receive clothing donations. Donations can also be dropped off at the Lorne Davies Complex Room 405 during business hours prior to Nov. 27.
 
The student-athletes are coming together this holiday season in support of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Vancouver and KidSport Vancouver.
 
"We are blessed that we get all of this athletic clothing every year and we realize that there are families and children out there not as fortunate as us," said Olivia Aguiar, a member of the women's soccer team and vice-president of SAAC. "We just want to be more than student-athletes; we want to be engaged in our communities as well."
 
"Any opportunity to give back to the community or kids playing sports, we love, because the sporting community has given us so much to be thankful for," she added.
 
The donated clothing is sold by Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Greater Vancouver and the proceeds help fund mentoring and at-risk youth programs in the community. KidSport Vancouver sells the equipment and money supports its community programs.
 
Last year the SAAC collected 35 bags of clothing and the student-athletes are trying to surpass that total this year.
