MONMOUTH, OR – Simon Fraser University had one of its poorest shooting games of the season and lost 68-45 to Western Oregon Wolves in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball game Thursday in Monmouth, OR.
Simon Fraser, which boasts the No. 2 scoring offence in the conference averaging 77 points per game, was held to a season-low 45 points by the Wolves. The loss drops Simon Fraser to 8-6 in the GNAC, 12-10 overall. Western Oregon improves to 3-10, 6-15 overall.
The top six teams receive a berth into the conference tournament, and SFU currently sits in fourth place.
The Clan managed just five of 24 field goals in the first half and never recovered against the Wolves. SFU scored its first basket four minutes into the game and didn't get another until the 12 minute mark of the first half.
"We turned over the ball too much to start the game and dug ourselves a big hole," said Clan coach
Bruce Langford. "We gave up good looks for no reason and we did not compete hard enough, early enough. We need to re-group and get ready for our next one."
SFU had 13 turnovers in the first half.
Up 33-15 at the break, Western Oregon pushed its lead to as many as 22 points early in the second half. The Clan cut the margin to 11 with 10 minutes to go but the Wolves stayed in control the rest of the way.
Western Oregon shot a season-high 59.6%, making 28-of-47 field goals, for the wire-to-wire win.
Simon Fraser missed 44 of 61 shots, including 23 of 29 three-pointers. In its previous two games, both victories, the Clan hit 31 of 61 shots from beyond the arc.
Simon Fraser hasn't scored as few as 45 points since the 2012-13 season when the Clan scored 40 points in a loss to Western Washington on March 9, 2013.
Senior forward
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC), the NCAA Division II scoring leader, moved closer to the GNAC all-time scoring record by scoring 19 points on 8-of-19 shooting. Chambers now has 1,801 career points. The record of 1,831 points is held by Bobbi Knudsen of Montana State Billings (2010-14).
No other Clan player reached double figures in scoring. Senior guard
Katie Lowen and forward
Rachel Fradgley added nine and seven points, respectively. Chambers and Fradgley led the Clan with six rebounds each, while guard
Alisha Roberts handed out a game-high tying five assists for SFU.
The Wolves had four players with 10 or more points, led by forward Dana Goularte with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
The Clan travels to Saint Martin's University for a game Saturday before the team returns home for its final two home games of the season, Thursday, Feb. 19 against nationally ranked and conference leading Alaska Anchorage and Saturday, Feb. 21 against Alaska on seniors' night.
