LAS VEGAS, NEV – Just as it did the day before, Simon Fraser University followed an unimpressive outing with an offensive outburst in its second game, resulting in a Saturday split at the Desert Stinger tournament at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.
The Clan scored seven runs in the first two innings and then hung on for a 9-6 win over Mary University after dropping an earlier game to Azusa Pacific 12-6.
Against Mary, Simon Fraser scored four runs on two hits in the first and three runs on two hits in the second. A leadoff homerun by freshman
Taylor Lundrigan in the third made it 8-1. Mary chipped away at the Clan lead, picking up two runs in the fourth and fifth innings and another in the sixth to get within two, but the Clan hung on for the win.
Clan starting pitcher
Alia Stachoski went three and two thirds innings, scattering four hits, with two strikeouts, giving up three runs for the win, improving her record to 2-1 on the season. Senior
Kelsie Hawkins came on in relief, pitching three and one third innings, giving up five hits and three runs.
The Azusa Pacific Cougars pounded out 15 hits in its 12-6 win over Simon Fraser.
Simon Fraser picked up two runs in the opening inning, including a leadoff home run to start the game from freshman
Taylor Gillis. Azusa Pacific got a run back in the bottom of the first and then took the lead for good with a four-run second inning, scoring all four with two outs.
The Cougars added two runs in the third inning to take a 7-3 lead, which Simon Fraser cut to 7-5 with a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, and a four-run fifth inning made it 12-5. All four runs in the fifth again came with two outs.
Simon Fraser used three pitchers in the game with
Jessica Goulet (Cambridge, ON) getting tagged with the loss. She pitched two innings giving up five hits and six runs, two earned, while striking out two.
