Clan Picks Up First GNAC Win

SFU scored three runs in the 10th inning to defeat WOU 5-3 in the opener to pick up its first conference win but then lost the second game 6-5 in eight innings.

MONMOUTH, OR – Simon Fraser University went to extra innings twice but got different results, splitting a double-header with Western Oregon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's softball action Friday in Monmouth, OR.

Simon Fraser scored three runs in the 10th inning to defeat the Wolves 5-3 in the opener to pick up its first conference win but then lost the second game 6-5 in eight innings.

SFU is now 10-10 overall, 1-3 in the GNAC.

"We stole one and we blew one," said Clan coach Mike Renney. "A split on the road is always welcome but right now we are riding an emotional roller coaster that comes with a young team. We are lucky that Kelsie (Hawkins) gave us the pitching we needed to get a win."

Defending GNAC champion Western Oregon was riding a six-game winning streak and had a one game lead in the early portion of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball pennant race. The Wolves are now 5-1 in the GNAC after the two-game series with the Clan.

Hawkins pitched her way out of a jam with the scored tied 2-2 and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth in Game 1 and the Clan got some timely hitting in the 10th.  Back-to-back RBI singles by short stop Danielle Raison and second base Taylor Lundrigan, and a wild pitch in the top of the 10th were enough to give the Clan the winning margin. SFU tagged Wolves pitching for 12 hits in the contest.

Hawkins went the distance for the Clan giving up seven hits and striking out 11. Hawkins sits in sixth place on the Clan's all-time strikeout list with 311, and is seven strikeouts away from moving past Ashley Lanz (317) into fifth place.

SFU gave up three runs in the first inning and went on to use three pitchers in Game 2 before losing 6-5. Starting pitcher Jessica Goulet returned to the game in the 8th and gave up an RBI single up the middle for the game-winning run. Goulet gave up five hits and five runs in three and two thirds innings and was charged with the loss, dropping her record to 1-6.

Outfielders Robyn Mogavero and Rachel Proctor hit back-to-back home runs to give the Clan a 4-3 led in the top of the third but the Wolves scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings. SFU tied the game in the seventh when Lizzet Dominguez walked Alex Baylak with two out and the bases loaded to send the game to extra innings.

The Simon Fraser University softball doubleheader against Saint Martin's University scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday) has been canceled due to rain and no makeup date has been scheduled. SFU is back in action on March 23 and March 24 for back-to-back doubleheaders with Montana State University Billings in Billings, Montana.
