Softball 1-2 to Start Turlock Tournament

Simon Fraser University sandwiched a come-from-behind 5-2 victory between two lopsided losses to kick off the Tournament of Champions Friday

TURLOCK – Simon Fraser University sandwiched a come-from-behind 5-2 victory between two lopsided losses to kick off the Tournament of Champions Friday at the Pedretti Softball Complex in Turlock.

Simon Fraser came-from-behind with five runs in the sixth inning to beat Chico State 5-2, after opening the tournament with a 10-2 loss to Hawaii Hilo.  The Clan ended the day losing 8-1 to tournament host Cal State Stanislaus.

Simon Fraser's record now stands at 1-2 at the tournament, 12-15 on the season.

"Our best players have to be our best players for us to be successful and that is not happening," said Clan coach Mike Renney, after the Clan lost for the sixth time in eight games. "We have to learn how to compete from start to finish but right now we get down and just roll over. Our players have to understand that they need to fight to get better and can't just throw in the towel."

"Consistency is also one of our biggest weaknesses right now," continued Renney.

Game 3 - Cal State Stanislaus 8 SFU 1

Against Cal State Stanislaus, the Warriors scored three runs in the second and sixth innings and tagged on two more in the fourth.  Simon Fraser got one run in the sixth.

Simon Fraser had just four hits in the contest but still managed to leave nine runners on base, including three in the sixth when the Clan had the bases loaded and two out but Nicole Ratel struck out.

The Warriors scored eight runs on nine hits against three Clan pitchers.

"We came out flat, hoping someone else would get the job done, and nobody stepped up and competed," said Renney. "It was a disappointing effort."

Game 2 – SFU 5 Chico State 2

Simon Fraser exploded for five runs in the sixth inning, sending 10 batters to the plate, for a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over Chico State. Short stop Danielle Raison came in to pinch hit for Stefanie Sheard and doubled to left center to score two runs, including the game winner. Raison later scored off a Stephanie Caron single down the right field line. Caron scored the final run.

The Wildcats put two aboard to get the potential tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh inning, but the Clan's Alia Stachoski retired both Emily McEnaney and Desiree Gonzlaez on groundouts to end the contest.

Stachoski picked up the win, going all seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits. She is 5-2 on the season.

Pitchers Brooke Langeloh of the Wildcats and Stachoski matched each other zero for zero through the first three innings before Chico State broke through in the top of the fourth for a 1-0 lead.

Chico State went up 2-0 in the fifth when a two-out triple scored another run. The Wildcats had a chance to extend its advantage in the sixth but the Clan's Stachoski manage to escape the inning with just a single earned run. With one out and the bases loaded, Stachoski got Courtney Brown to fly out to right field and Marlee Rettig to ground out to third to end the inning.

Game 1 - Hawaii-Hilo 10 SFU 2

Simon Fraser lost 10-2 to Hawaii Hilo in the opening game after three Clan pitchers got tagged for 14 hits, giving up three runs in the second inning and five runs in the sixth.

Simon Fraser scored one run in the second and another in the sixth.

First base Alex Baylak went two-for-two and knocked in one run and scored another.

The 24-team tournament continues on Saturday and concludes on Sunday in Turlock.
