Goulet Unable To Hold Off Toros

Pitcher Jessica Goulet gave up just two hits through four innings but her teammates managed just one hit through five

TURLOCK, CA – Cal State Dominguez Hills freshman pitcher Alyssa Valinches tossed a four hitter and her teammates exploded for seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings as Simon Fraser University lost 7-0 to the Toros in its final game at the Tournament of Champions Sunday at the Pedretti Softball Complex in Turlock, CA.

Simon Fraser finished 2-4 in the tournament and is now 13-17 overall.

Simon Fraser starter Jessica Goulet went head-to-head with Valinches through four innings, holding the Toros scoreless. Goulet gave up just two hits through four innings but her teammates managed just one hit through five.

"It was great to have Jess back on track and throwing with confidence," said Clan head coach Mike Renney. "But we didn't get much offence for her and we simply didn't dig in at a time when we needed to dig in and compete."

The game turned in the fifth inning when the Toros scored three runs. The Toros added four more runs in the sixth against relievers Alia Stachoski and Meghan Malkowich for the win.

"We had an opportunity in the fourth but we couldn't execute a sacrifice bunt with a runner on and then the wheels fell off," said Renney. "There was a huge momentum swing at that point."

Simon Fraser right fielder Rachal Proctor hit into a double play in the fourth inning with none out and a runner on first.

"We can compete with anyone even when we bring our "B" game but we still have some youthful tendencies that result in big momentum swings the other way," continued Renney. "We have to learn to handle these situations better."

Clan pitchers gave up 11 hits in the contest

The tournament was notable for other reasons. Senior shortstop Danielle Raison and senior catcher Kaitlyn Cameron joined the Clan's 100 hit club, and the program played its 1000th game, now with an all-time record of 652 wins, 351 losses and 2 ties. The team won four NAIA National Championships in during its time in NAIA, winning in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2010.

Simon Fraser returns home for a four game series against Northwest Nazarene scheduled for Friday with a double header beginning at 4 PM at Beedie Field. Saturday's game begins at 2 PM.
