here: Simon Fraser has lost eight straight GNAC games – six straight at home -- to take itself out of the playoff picture.
Western Oregon sent 21 batters to the plate and scored 16 runs in the top of the sixth inning of Game 1 to all but end the Clan's playoff hopes. The score was 5-3 heading into the sixth.
Western Oregon improves to 18-23 overall, 10-6 GNAC while Simon Fraser falls to16-26 overall, 5-15 in the GNAC). WOU is in the GNAC playoff picture with two weekends left in the regular season.
"We had a big emotional letdown after losing twice to Saint Martin's on Saturday and our pitching simply didn't get the job done," said Clan head coach
Mike Renney. ""If you don't make plays then you hand momentum to your opponent and that's what happened."
In Game 1,
Alia Stachoski got the start for the Clan, allowing 19 hits in 5.1 innings of work before turning the ball over to the duo of
Meghan Malkowich and
Kendra Goodman for the final two outs.
The opener on Sunday would be a pitcher's duel over the first three innings before Western Oregon scored five runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning that included a two-run home run.
Simon Fraser would answer back with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, as second base
Taylor Lundrigan brought the Clan within two runs (5-3) on a two-run double down the left field line that scored both
Robyn Mogavero and
Stefanie Sheard.
That would be as close as SFU would get, as Western Oregon put together a record-breaking performance in the top of the sixth inning when the Wolves scored 16 runs on 15 hits that included nine run-scoring hits.
Western Oregon jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in Game 2 but Simon Fraser would strike back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, as seniors
Kaitlyn Cameron and
Danielle Raison, and
Nicole Ratel each recorded RBI hits to put the Clan in front by a single run, 4-3.
Western Oregon would answer back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to move back in front 5-4.
Simon Fraser would threaten to score the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Raison registered a two-out single before she advanced to third on a double by
Alex Baylak that hit the left-centre field wall, falling a few feet short of a homerun. Cameron had a final at-bat with two runners on but popped up to end the game.
"To the team's credit they came out of the break and didn't surrender the attempt to battle after a Game 1 shellacking," added Renney. "We had a chance in the last inning of Game 2 with Kaitlyn (Cameron) at bat, and although she would have loved to have a hit for a storybook ending, she didn't get it done and was obviously disappointed to miss the opportunity."
Seven different Simon Fraser players tallied hits in the finale with Sheard driving in a pair of runs for the Clan.
SFU was led offensively by the senior Cameron with a combined three hits, while Raison, Sheard, and
Robyn Mogavero each had two hits on the afternoon for the Clan. Lundrigan and Sheard drove in a team-high two RBI each for SFU with Cameron and Sheard scoring a team-leading two runs each for the home team.
SFU returns to action on Sunday, April 19, when the Clan hosts UBC at Beedie Field in its final home game of the season beginning at noon.
