ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Simon Fraser University softball team closed out its season with a pair of losses Sunday afternoon, losing 11-0 and 10-5 to Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wa.
Simon Fraser finished its 2015 season with a 17-30 record with a 5-19 Great Northwest Athletic Conference mark. Central Washington's season also came to an end finishing 20-23, 11-13 in the GNAC.
"Looking back we made significant strides over last year but still have a ways to go to return to the standard our program has been known for," said head coach
Mike Renney. "It will be tough to replace outgoing seniors but that is tempered by a strong freshmen class and the return next season of our two top hitters –
Rachel Proctor and
Alex Baylak.
"Without a doubt we need to improve in a number of categories but I am confident that we have the foundational players from which to continue our rebuilding process."
Freshmen
Taylor Lundrigan (Abbotsford, BC) led the Clan with 48 hits and was second with four homeruns this season. She went 0-for-6 in the series against the Wildcats and finished two hits short of the Clan freshman record of 50 hits set by Angela Lichty in 1999.
Taylor Gillis (Langley, BC) broke the freshmen record for At Bats in a season (134) held by both Lorissa Burns (1995) and Lindsay Chester (1996)). Gillis had 155 At Bats this year, with 38 hits, two homeruns and 12 RBIs.
Although freshman pitcher
Alia Stachoski lost game 2 on Sunday, she finished 8-11, placing her fifth all-time for wins by a Clan freshman.
The Wildcat offense was relentless in game one scoring 11 runs, six of which came in the first inning enroute to the five inning shutout win.
The Clan struck first in the night cap scoring one run in the first inning and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead. The lead was short lived as the Wildcats scored three times on bases loaded walks in the third inning to tie the game.
Central Washington added four more runs in the fourth inning highlighted by Austin Wilkerson's second homerun of the day and added three more in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
"Unfortunately for us after we were eliminated from post season play a couple weeks ago and beat rival UBC last weekend, our focus shifted more to finals than to softball which as a university coach I have to understand," said Renney.
"I was not pleased with our level of compete in our first game but I am pleased with the way we battled in our last game," he added. "I am proud to have coached our three seniors --
Kaitlyn Cameron,
Danielle Raison and
Kelsie Hawkins -- and I know they will represent our university as proud alumni in the next chapters of their lives."
Cameron went 3-for-3 with two RBIs in the second game and Raison was 3-for-4 in the series. Hawkins is injured and did not play.
Nicole Ratel hit her third homerun of the season Sunday.
