LACEY, WA – Simon Fraser University lost a pair of close games to conference leading Saint Martin's University 10-6 and 8-2 Monday in Lacey, Washington.
SFU falls to 16-20 overall and 5-9 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference while SMU moves to 30-14 overall and 10-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. SMU will play SFU again on Saturday at Beedie Field beginning at 1:00 PM.
The top for teams qualify for post-season in the GNAC and the Clan trails third place WWU (8-6), who visit Beedie Field on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 PM.
Montana State Billings and Central Washington are tied for fourth with 9-7 records.
The Clan was in both games until the fifth inning when the Saints broke open both games with big innings. Simon Fraser was leading 5-4 after four innings in Game 1 when the Saints scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the win. SFU and SMU were tied 2-2 after four innings in Game 2 when the Saints scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth.
"Last year we would have been happy to be competitive with the conference leader but this season we are disappointed we didn't get at least a split," said Clan coach
Mike Renney. "We hit the ball early in both games and we were competitive but against good team you can't let up and we did."
"Good teams can comeback fast and Saint Martin's did in both games. We were the first team to falter and they were worthy of the victories."
Pitcher
Alia Stachoski and
Jessica Goulet gave up 11 hits and seven earned runs in the 8-2 loss. Goulet and senior
Kelsie Hawkins combined to give up 10 hits and 10 earned runs in the Game 1 loss.
Freshman catcher
Katherine Murnaghan went 3-for-5 in the doubleheader with two RBI while freshman second base
Taylor Lundrigan, who is hitting .351 for the season, was 4-for-7 with four runs scored.
"Our offensive leaders in this series were our freshmen so the future is bright," added Renney.
Sophomore outfielder
Robyn Mogavero hit her second homerun of the season while junior outfielder
Rachel Proctor recorded her second triple in three games. She is hitting .362 this season with nine extra base hits and 23 RBI.
