Defensive Effort Delivers 76-47 Road Victory

Simon Fraser University held Seattle Pacific University to 20 first half points and never looked back, earning a 76-47 road victory over the Falcons.

SEATTLE, Wa — Simon Fraser University held Seattle Pacific University to 20 first half points and never looked back, earning a 76-47 road victory over the Falcons in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball action.

Simon Fraser held the Falcons to just five field goals in the first half and eight second quarter points. No Seattle players scored in double figures in the entire game.

"We defended very well and executed our game plan," said Clan head coach Bruce Langford. "Other than a few offensive boards, we plugged the lane and didn't allow any easy shots."

The Clan combined an outstanding defensive effort with outstanding shooting. The Clan was 14 for 22 (63.6%) from the field, 5 of 11 from three-point range and 9-of-10 from the free throw line in building a 42-20 first half lead.

The Clan shot 28-of-52 (53.8%) for the game.

With the win the Clan moves into fourth place in the GNAC with a 4-3 record while the Falcons fell to 3-4. Overall, the Clan is 6-6 while the Falcons are 6-8 overall.

Leading by 22 points entering the second half, the Clan overcame an early run by the Falcons in the third quarter and then sealed the victory. Seattle opened the third quarter on a 9-2 run to pull to within 44-29.

"We didn't let up in the second half at all," said Langford. "We weathered the storm early, hit some big shots, and then they didn't have the energy to play catchup anymore."

Simon Fraser sophomore point guard Ellen Kett, in the midst of a remarkable season leading NCAA Division 2 in three-point shooting, scored 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting. She was 5-of-6 on three-pointers, dished out two assists and had one steal in 37 minutes.

"Ellen is playing outstanding and their coach told me before the game that she couldn't believe her transformation from last year to this year," said Langford.

Kett is averaging 12.2 points for the Clan this season and is shooting 55.6% from three-point range. Kett recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists in her last game.

Elisa Homer scored 15 points and pulled down four rebounds while Rachel Fradgley added 14 points and nine boards for the Clan.

Freshman Sophie Swant scored eight points on 3-of-4 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and added four assists in 17 minutes.

The Clan was out-rebounded the Falcons 42 to 29 but forced 22 SPU turnovers.

The SFU women's team will be back in action Saturday, January 16th at Saint Martin's University.
