LACEY, Wash. — Sophomore guard
Elisa Homer equaled a Great Northwest Athletic Conference record with nine three-pointers to lead Simon Fraser University to its third straight win, 84-54, over Saint Martin's University Saturday evening in women's basketball action.
Homer hit nine of 18 three-pointers and scored 32 points as the Clan built a comfortable lead midway through the third quarter before the Saints came storming back. SMU cut the lead to seven with nine minutes to go in the game. But the Clan held on and surged back to the 30-point win with a 29-point fourth quarter.
With the win the Clan improves to 5-3 in the GNAC, 7-6 overall. SFU has won three in a row and four of its last five games.
SMU is 3-5 in the GNAC, 5-10 overall.
"Homer is playing with a lot confidence right now," said Clan head coach
Bruce Langford. "Everybody in the conference knows she can shoot the three and now she is getting even better at reading screens and knowing when to pop back and take the three."
Homer ranks seventh in NCAA Division II averaging 3.55 three-pointers per game and she is 26th overall with 39 threes. Saturday, she tied the record shared by Kelsey Burns of Seattle Pacific and Sasha King of Alaska Anchorage.
"Tonight she made a lot of tough shots, and what's just as impressive, is she also picked up six boards—that's sweet," said Langford.
Homer was 10 of 21 from the field, three-of-five from the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds. She scored 10 points in the first half as Simon Fraser built a 40-24 lead at the break.
Saint Martin's cut the Clan lead to seven, 55-48, with nine minutes to go in the game. SMU scored 11 fourth quarter points after scoring seven in the first.
"They battled and came back to make it close early in the fourth but we weathered the storm," said Langford. "Homer hit a three to get the lead back to 10 and we took off."
