BURNABY, B.C. – The game was tied with less than five minutes to go but Simon Fraser University lost a heart-breaker 76-72 to Concordia University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday at in the West Gym.
Simon Fraser was called for two offensive fouls that wiped out two baskets inside the final two minutes that turned a two point game into a Concordia victory.
Trailing 65-63 after CU's Martin Drew missed two free throws, SFU senior
Michael Harper drove the lane and scored but the basket was waived off and Harper called for an offensive foul. It was his fifth foul of the game.
Two possessions later, tied 69-65, SFU's
JJ Pankratz drove through the paint for a basket that would have pulled the Clan to within two. Instead, Pankratz was also called for the offensive foul.
The Cavaliers stretched their lead to seven, 74-67, with 12.4 seconds left and appeared in control with their largest lead. But Clan point guard
Oshea Gairey hit a three and the Cavaliers turned the ball over on the inbounds. A
Gibran Sewani dunk made it 74-72 with 3.1 seconds left.
Concordia sealed the win with a pair of free throws to keep the Clan winless in the GNAC with a 0-8 record. Concordia moves to 3-5.
The score was tied 12 times and there were 14 lead changes. The difference in the game was the Clan went five-of-23 (21.7%) from three-point range while the Cavaliers were four-of-nine. The Clan took nine more field goals than the Cavaliers.
The Clan held a seven point lead midway through the first and led 29-28 at the break.
SFU's last lead of the game was at the 7:08 mark when it was up 56-54.
Gairey led the Clan with a game-high 22 points on six-of-16 shooting and six rebounds while Harper was an efficient seven-of-12 for 15 points with six rebounds and five assists before fouling out. Sewani added 13 points and nine boards.
Concordia was led by Latrell Wilson with 21 points.
Next up, SFU is on the road for a game against Central Washington on Thursday in Ellensburg, Wash. Tip-off is 7PM.
