NAMPA, ID
- Extra time solved nothing on Thursday evening, as the No. 2-ranked SFU Clan soccer team (8-0-1, 3-0-1) picked up a 2-2 draw against the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders (4-3-3, 1-1-2), snapping the team's season-opening winning streak at eight games.
A Crusaders own goal, as well as a nifty effort from team captain
Ryan Dhillon, accounted for the Clan's two markers on the evening.
"Honestly, we played good football today – just couldn't finish, and that was disappointing," said SFU head coach
Clint Schneider. "The positives are that we played a lot of good stretches, and outside of two errors, we didn't allow them to threaten much."
Controlling the run of play and outshooting Northwest Nazzarene 6-0 early, the Clan were rewarded with a lucky break to draw first blood. Just over 30 minutes into the contest, a well-delivered corner from
Adam Jones caromed off the noggin of a Crusader defender and found its way past goalkeeper Ryan Foo.
Six minutes later, Northwest Nazarene got back on the board, as sophomore forward Logan Wood capitalized on a mishit punch-out from SFU goalkeeper
Brandon Watson, pouncing on the loose ball and firing into the empty cage.
The Clan were dominant throughout the latter half of the first frame, and that continued into the second stanza.
Just two minutes into the period, Dhillon got into a 1v1 situation just outside the Crusaders' box. Taking a nice feed from Jones, Dhillon outran his defender wide and made no mistake from in tight, beating Foo clean.
"Ryan was great tonight," said Schneider. "His speed was creating a lot of problems for [Northwest Nazarene], and it was great to see him get one there. Terrific play."
Just shy of the game's 62-minute mark, the Crusaders drew even for the second time, with another uncharacteristic Watson punch-out gaffe, this time on a corner, leading to the Rene Duevel marker.
"
Brandon Watson has been so good for us all year, we know this is a one-off for him," assured Schneider. "Things like today happen – that's football. We're not even worried about him."
The Clan pressed over the game's final 30 minutes of regulation and extra time, but couldn't capitalize on the 10 shots they fired at the Northwest Nazarene.
"They just did enough to earn the draw, and we just couldn't break it," assessed Schneider. "I've told guys that games will go the way that we go, and we'll need to be better in the final third going forward. The guys have shown that ability all season, so now we have to get back to that – you can't make costly offensive mistakes like that playing GNAC football."
The Clan will get the chance to rebound quickly, as they travel to Billings, MT, to take on the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets this Saturday, October 8. The Clan and Jackets are set to kick off at 2:00 pm.
