BURNABY, BC - The Simon Fraser University Clan women's volleyball team is off to its best start in 15 years. Friday the Clan rolled over Northwest Nazarene in straights set to improve to 13-2 this season. The Clan has lost just once in its past 12 games.
Simon Fraser sits in second place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference with a 6-2 mark after taking down NNU 25-21, 25-18 and 25-15. NNU fell to 11-3 overall and 4-3 in the GNAC.
Simon Fraser posted its best season in NCAA two years ago when it went 17-9 overall and 11-7 in the GNAC. A decade in CIS never produced a better start than the Clan is off to this season.
Friday, the Clan was led by
Tessa May with 16 kills and nine blocks,
Tamara Nipp with 44 assists and
Alison McKay with 14 digs.
Simon Fraser opened with a 10-3 run in the first set, and then held off a Crusaders comeback attempt that got them to within a point, 22-21. Simon Fraser sealed the win with the final three points.
NNU lead briefly 14-12, in the second set, but a 10-1 charge by the Clan, aided by three Crusader hitting errors, put Simon Fraser comfortably in control, 22-15 and they were never threatened.
The third set proved to be more of the same as the Clan jumped up 4-0 and never trailed, though NNU pulled to within 8-6. SFU outscored the Crusaders 17-9 the rest of the way.
The Clan will next face third place Central Washington (9-6, 5-2) on Saturday in the West Gym in the team's annual #PinkDay, where funds raised will be donated to the BC Breast Cancer Foundation. Game time is 7 PM.
