PORTLAND, Ore.— Five players scored in double figures and Simon Fraser University ended an 18 game winless streak with a 90-70 win on the road at Concordia University on Thursday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball action.
Simon Fraser (2-19, 1-14 GNAC) led wire-to-wire to pick up its first win in 18 games, and first this season in the GNAC after losing its first 14 conference contests. Simon Fraser last won on Nov. 17, 2015.
Concordia fell to 6-16 overall, 4-11 in the GNAC.
Coming off the bench, SFU's
Oshea Gairey led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Gairey, a freshman, is typically the Clan's starter at point guard, starting 15 of 19 games this season. But Clan head coach
Virgil Hill juggled the lineup to find a winning formula and it worked.
Four of Gairey's teammates also chipped in with at least 10 points with Max Barkley (17) and Hiddle Vos (15) leading the pack.
Michael Harper chipped in with 14 points and 11 rebounds playing 39 minutes while
Andrew Williamson added 12.
Simon Fraser didn't allow a Concordia field goal over the first six minutes and held the Cavaliers to 37.5 percent shooting from the floor in the first 20 minutes to claim a 44-28 lead at the break. The Clan never let the Cavs get back to within eight points in the second half.
"We got off to a good start and tonight we were able to sustain it offensively and defensively," said Hill.
The Clan shot 49.3 per cent as a team, went 9-of-15 on threes and was 15-of-18 from the line.
The Clan scored 26 points off 22 CU turnovers and out-rebounded the Cavaliers 38-30.
Latrell Wilson paced the CU attack with a 17-point night while Riley Hawken finished with 14.
SFU plays Western Oregon Saturday on the road. Their next home game will take place at 7PM in the West Gym against Northwest Nazarene on February 18
