NAMPA, ID – Sophomore forward
Elisa Homer scored 40 points and set a Great Northwest Athletic Conference record with 12 three-pointers, leading Simon Fraser University to an 87-65 win over Northwest Nazarene University on Thursday.
Homer (North Vancouver, BC), went 12-for-20 on three-pointers to break her own GNAC record that she shared with two other players that was set earlier this season when she hit nine threes in a game. Homer is the GNAC leader, and amongst the top three-point shooters in NCAA D2, averaging 3.8 per game.
The NCAA Division II record for three-point field goals made is 16 while the Division I record is 12.
"She was on fire right away, and in the natural flow of the offence, she was getting open and taking her shots with confidence," said Clan head coach
Bruce Langford. "She was hitting everything. When she got open she took the shot."
Simon Fraser moves to 10-8 overall and 8-5 in league play while the Crusaders fell to 8-11 overall and 6-7 in the GNAC.
"Homer is pumped to get the record but also a little tired," added Langford. "We had three kids in foul trouble most of the game so I relied heavily on her, Ellen (Kett) and (Alisha) Roberts, and she was tired at the end of the game."
Homer hit her first four three-pointers and went 7-of-9 in the first half. She had 25 points at the break as SFU built a 54-40 lead.
"She was shooting the ball really well in the morning warmup and actually stayed longer to take more shots, and you could see she had a lot of confidence," said Langford.
It was the fourth highest single game point total in Simon Fraser history, falling just short of the school record of 45 points set by Canadian Olympian and Clan Hall of Famer Teresa Gabriele (nee Kleindienst) against Trinity Western University during the 2001-02 season. SFU played in the CIS at that time.
Former Canadian Olympian and Clan Hall of Famer Michelle Hendry is also in the record book with 42 points against Central Washington during the 1989-90 season. Last year,
Erin Chambers scored 41 points in a game against Saint Martin's.
The GNAC single game scoring record is 45 points.
Homer now leads the GNAC in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game.
Homer played 33 minutes, shooting 13-of-23 from the field and 2-of-3 from the free throw line. Guard
Ellen Kett had a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists in 38 minutes, going 3-of-6 on threes. She leads NCAA D2 in three-point shooting.
Rachel Fradgley had 16 points and 8 rebounds.
Homer was one short of the GNAC record of 21 3-point field goal attempts.
SFU plays at Central Washington on Saturday. Their next home game will take place on February 11th at 7PM in the West Gym vs Saint Martin's.
