North's last-minute stunner keeps Clan perfect in Hawaii

The redshirt sophomore nets a goal and assist in 2-1 win over BYU Hawaii

LAIE, HI - Talk about a crazy Hawaiian adventure.

In a game in which the teams traded goals in the final four minutes, the No. 6-ranked SFU Clan men's soccer team struck last, as a 89th-minute stunner from forward Michael North propelled the Clan to a 2-1 win over the BYU Hawaii Seasiders, and kept the Clan's perfect 4-0 start intact.

"It definitely says a lot about the team we have that we were able to win this one, as close as it was," said SFU head coach Clint Schneider. "Especially in a region like ours, teams are so good and present so many challenges that you're not going to win very many just walking away. The fact that the guys showed the toughness to get the result even against a really impressive team, and on the road, was great to see."

North's goal put the forward's ball skills and athleticism on full display, as the 5-8 forward took a quick ball from Kyle Jones at the top of the box, won a fifty-fifty ball to beat his defender, and slotted it in behind BYU Hawaii keeper Dwayne Wittman.

"Anytime Michael gets the ball in that area, we let him go for it," said Schneider. "He's so quick, so strong, and has such good balance that he's always a threat from in close. Unbelievable finish, and we needed it too."

The North marker came just three minutes after Jessey Hein delivered the 1-1 equalizer for the Seasiders, as the freshman midfielder took a terrific feed from fellow rookie Braden Bailey across the goal mouth and stretched out to deflect it behind SFU's Brandon Watson.

"That goal was a world-class finish," said Schneider. "And [the Seasiders] played us so well tonight, they really deserved that one. They're a team that's definitely going to win a lot of games this year."

Not only did the Seasiders notch the first goal against SFU this season, but their four shots on goal were more than the Clan had surrendered in the three games to this point in the campaign.

The Clan got on the board early in the first frame, as sophomore Mamadi Camara deftly created space from the BYU Hawaii centerbacks before taking a slick feed from North seven yards out from the Seasiders goal. Camara hit his mark, giving SFU the 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game.

The Clan will now set their attention to the final regional contest on their schedule, as they will take on the Hawaii Pacific University Sharks at 6:00 pm on Saturday, September 17 in Honolulu, HI.
