Clan Remains Perfect 5-0 After Win Over Hawaii Pacific

Camara nets his third goal of the season, whlie Pang gets his first in win over HPU Sharks

HONOLULU, HI - The SFU Clan soccer team will enter conference play with a perfect 5-0 record, as they ended their island adventure with a 2-1 win over the Hawaii Pacific University Sharks on Saturday night.

Sophomore standout Mamadi Camara notched a goal and assist for the Clan in the win, while freshman forward Riley Pang netted the first goal of his collegiate career. On the other side, Sven Koenig bagged HPU's lone marker as they fell to 0-2-2 on the year. Camara finished the regional schedule as the Clan's leading scorer, netting three goals and two assists in five appearances.

"Really pleased with the performance of the guys," said SFU head coach Clint Schneider. "To get five out of five non-conference wins, that's first class. We played really well tonight, and deserved to win against a very good team."

The Sharks got on the board just under 43 minutes into the contest, as they exploited gaps in the SFU defense enough to get Koenig in alone with SFU goalkeeper Brandon Watson.

A player Schneider dubbed "one of the best we're going to play all year", Koenig made no mistake from in close, putting a bullet past the SFU keeper.

However, the lead didn't last long, as just 30 seconds later, the Clan knotted it up a 1-1. A couple of quick passes from defender Robert Hyams and Camara put Pang in prime scoring position, with space in the HPU box. The rookie didn't hesitate, opening his SFU account with a quick strike.

"That's why we recruited him so hard, why we've worked so hard over the past few years to create a relationship with him – he's an ideal target striker," said Schnieder. "Over the past couple of games, you've seen him start to put everything together, and it's pretty exciting for us."

What impressed Schneider more than the goal itself was his side's ability to rebound so quickly after the Sharks opened the scoring.

"It shows the resiliency of these guys, and their attitudes," noted the head coach. "We've got a groups of guys that just don't quit, and they've got a great mentality about them. They care about each other, they work for each other, and when you need a goal, that kind of stuff becomes so important."

The Clan took the lead just 10 minutes into the second frame. Off a free kick, Camara picked up the loose ball 40 yards from the Sharks' goal, making a terrific 10-yard run before launching a rocket top-corner.

Sitting with that 5-0 record, Schneider's team is right on track as they enter GNAC play.

"I always saw this team competing for national championship and conference championships, and right now these guys are living it. They're playing like a team that can accomplish those goals, so it's pretty awesome to be a part of. They ultimately decide how far we can go, and they're starting to believe that we can go pretty far."
