Explosive Clan midfield stars in 3-1 win over SPU in GNAC debut

Jones, Camara, and Dhillon with multi-point outings as Clan stay perfect against Falcons

BURNABY, BC - After a few weeks of road games in their regional schedule, the SFU Clan men's soccer team (6-0, 1-0-0) came home in style on Thursday, opening their 2016 GNAC season with a 3-1 decision over long-time rivals the Seattle Pacific University Falcons (2-3-1, 0-1-0).

With the result, the Clan stretches their unbeaten streak at Terry Fox Field to 16 games, dating back to October 2014.

Against Seattle Pacific, the score sheet was dominated by the Clan's big guns – Adam Jones paced the club with a pair of goals, Mamadi Camara notched a goal and assist, while team captain Ryan Dhillon netted two spectacular helpers in the win.

"That's what we've come to expect out of these guys," said Schneider. "Honestly, I feel that we have the best footballing midfield in the league – some teams might be more athletic, we have the most skilled footballing midfield out there. Teams all over our conference would love to have even one of these guys. We're fortunate to have a plethora of them, all through our lineup."

Forward Gabe Kellum bagged the only goal for Seattle Pacific, who played the Clan much closer than the difference in records would indicate.

"They're a really good side," said Schneider. "Had some hard luck finishing today, but they were dangerous, and the next time we meet, it very well could be a different result."

29 minutes into the contest, the Clan drew first blood. Off a throw-in, the ball found its way to Camara at the edge of the SPU box, before the forward volleyed it back to an onrushing Dhillon. The SFU captain made a slick run into the middle of the park before finding Jones with a quick pass.

From just eight yards out, Jones beat SPU keeper Cody Lang clean with a bullet to the lower left-hand corner, making it 1-0 for the home side.

"Mamadi found Ryan, who made a great run, and was gracious enough to pass it off to me," smiled Jones. "All I had to do was knock it in."

At 55 minutes, Dhillon went back to work. On the right flank, the senior showed off some fancy footwork to freeze an SPU defender, before finding Camara in front for the tap-in.

The Falcons finally got on the board off a penalty kick in the 75th minute, as Kellum potted one from the spot after Michael North was called for a foul in the SFU box.

The Falcons' momentum didn't last long, as three minutes later, the Clan made it 3-1.

Deep in the Seattle Pacific end, Robert Hyams delivered a free kick into the box from the right wing. Falcons midfielder Jess Cayetano shanked the proceeding clearing attempt, which found Adam Jones at the top of the box. The sophomore midfielder didn't hesitate, blasting his second goal of the contest by Lang.

"To do that two games in a row, that's unbelievable," said Schneider of the remarkably quick comeback, following a similar sequence against the Hawaii Pacific Sharks last week. "These guys just don't want to let teams back in games."

Even with the game's final score, Schneider still sees some room for improvement with his 6-0-0 squad.

"We're definitely happy with the result," noted the coach. "However, we know that we can still get better. We have more in the tank, and that should be scary for the rest of the conference."

SFU will have to turn it around quickly, as they head down to Lacey, WA, to take on the Saint Martin's Saints this Saturday, September 24. The two sides are scheduled to get underway at 4:00 pm.
