BILLINGS, Mont. — No. 3 ranked Simon Fraser University scored twice in the first half and then rode out a 2-1 win over California State San Bernardino in the 2017 Rimrock Classic at Montana State Billings.
Simon Fraser scored goals in the 8th and 38th minutes by
Pascal Schmidt and
Rahid Rahiem, his second of the season, and held the Coytoes without a shot in the opening 45 minutes.
After a season-opening 8-0 win, Simon Fraser moved from No. 13 to No. 3 in the national rankings.
"We are glad to come away with a result against a team that is way better than their record would indicate," said Clan head coach
Clint Schneider. "We learned a lot about ourselves and how to close games out. It wasn't our best effort, but I think we did enough. We will enjoy the win and get back at it tomorrow."
CSUSB senior Kieron Coleman scored with four minutes remaining to make the game appear close on paper at least. Coleman's goal was CSUSB's first tally of the season as the team dropped to 0-3.
SFU out shot CSUSB 13-4 and the teams combined for 27 fouls (CSUSB 17, SFU 10). Simon Fraser had four corners to CSUSB's two.
Miguel Hof got his second straight start in goal for the Clan and made one save to secure the victory and move his record to 2-0 on the season.
SFU and CSUSB met for the third time on the pitch with the Clan improving to 3-0. This year marks the second year in a four-year contract that the teams will play each other. The series returns to Southern California next year and then at SFU in 2019.
SFU will play Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday. The team will be back on Burnaby campus to continue their home schedule on Friday, September 15 against Slippery Rock University. Game time is set for 7pm at Terry Fox Field.
