BURNABY — Simon Fraser University staged an epic second-half comeback that fell short, losing 74-63 to Seattle Pacific in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday in the West Gym.
The Falcons raced out to 10-0 and 14-1 leads and then held Simon Fraser to seven first half field goals, building a 19-point advantage at the half, 42-23. But Simon Fraser hit its first four shots of the third quarter, SPU missed its first seven, and the Clan cut the lead to four, 43-39 and then five, 49-44.
SPU regained control of the game on a 9-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters, pushing the margin back to 14 at 58-44. The Clan never got closer than eight after that.
The loss dropped the Clan to 8-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Seattle Pacific has won three straight games and is now 12-3 and 6-2 in the GNAC.
Tayla Jackson scored 14 points and pulled down five rebounds while
Sophie Swant scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds and
Nicole Vander Helm had 11 points and seven rebounds.
Senior guard Jordan McPhee led all scorers with 26 points and had four rebounds and four assists while forward Courtney Hollander added 11 points for the Falcons.
SPU scored 30 of its 74 points off Simon Fraser turnovers and the Falcons drained 26 of 34 free throws while the Clan connected on 10 of 12.
Simon Fraser is on the road for its next four games and then returns to the West Gym on Feb. 1 against Concordia.
