ANCHORAGE, AK ---
The Simon Fraser Men's Basketball team will leave Alaska disappointed, dropping second game of the weekend to Alaska Anchorage. Alaska Anchorage put in an impressive performance with an 81-66 victory against SFU Saturday night. Â
Othniel Spence and
Jasdeep Singh stepped on the court on fire, putting up a combined 16 points within the first seven minutes of the game. The momentum gave their team an edge early, and SFU was up 20-12 halfway through the first half. Â
Anchorage was quick to catch up to Simon Fraser however, creating an uninterrupted 13-point for themselves, putting them ahead by 5 points.  Anchorage did not let up over the remainder of the half, with Simon Fraser behind 42-30 at the break. Â
Despite a 9-point run early in the second half, Simon Fraser was unable to hold Anchorage long enough to gain back their lead. Anchorage held steady the rest of the game, not allowing Simon Fraser to come within a 6 point reach. Â
Anchorage excelled in their accuracy at the hoop, boasting 53.7% shooting from the field in comparison to 44.1% for SFU. Both Spence and Singh excelled in Saturday's game for SFU, contributing 15 points each to the scoreboard, Spence also added 6 rebounds and
Michael Provenzano had 10 points and 1 block.
Head Coach
Steve Hanson provided his thoughts after the tough loss: "I thought we played some quality minutes in the 1st half. Anchorage shoots the ball so well at home, and we did some good things early. However, they out-executed us and shot timely shots. We rebounded well, but didn't put enough pressure on the interior of their defense, only shooting 9 free throws. We need to get healthy now and get ready for Western Oregon on Thursday."
Simon Fraser will return to home court in Burnaby on January 16th to play Western Oregon University at 7:00 PM. Â
