Simon Fraser Drops Monday Matchup with WOU

BURNABY, BC --- The Simon Fraser University Men's Basketball Team fell to the visiting Western Oregon Wolves on Monday Afternoon in the West Gym by a final score of 94 to 80.

Western Oregon's 55 second-half points saw them overcome a 3-point halftime deficit to claim a double-digit win by the time things were all said and done on SFU's home court.

The Wolves had two players reach 20+ points on the afternoon, with Tyreek Price scoring 26, while Cameron Cranston put up 20 points (all of which came in the second half).

Overall Simon Fraser had a strong first half, as Othniel Spence led the way with 14 points on 5 for 6 shooting and the home team put up 42 points. Spence also surpassed a significant career milestone in the first half, as he eclipsed 1000 total points in his SFU career.

Simon Fraser shot almost 54% from the field over the course of the matchup, but ultimately rebounding let SFU down, as they conceded a -9 rebounding margin in the contest. Not to be outdone, Western Oregon shot incredibly well on the afternoon, positing 57% shooting from the field, and shooting an even 50% from three-point range.

Statistical leaders for Simon Fraser included Jasdeep Singh, who put up 21 points and 5 rebounds. Othniel Spence added 19 points and 5 rebounds of his own, while Michael Provenzano had 18 points and 5 assists, shooting 7 for 11 from the field.

Head Coach Steve Hanson added his thoughts after the tough loss: "I was happy with how we started, and we had a lot of good energy in the 1st half. The second half we didn't get back in transition defense and didn't rebound the ball like we can. 25 minutes of good basketball doesn't cut it in this league, we need to play hard for 40 minutes going forward."

Up next, SFU is on the road to take on Saint Martin's University at 7PM on Jan 23rd.
