BURNABY, BC --- Back on home court for the first time in over two weeks, the Simon Fraser Men's Basketball Team claimed a 91 to 81 victory over the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.
Â
After trailing for the majority of the first half due to the Seawolves clinical three-point shooting (the Seawolves are ranked 7
th in DII in total three pointers made), Simon Fraser worked their way back into the game with massive contributions off the bench.Â
Â
David Penney,
Michael Hannan,
Graham Miller and
Drew Bryson all made an impact when the starters exited the game, and Bryson was the one who put Simon Fraser ahead for the first time at 41-40 with 1:51 remaining in the first half.Â
Â
After a terrific final series of play for SFU in the first half that ended in a
Graham Miller alley-oop, Simon Fraser took a 48 to 46 lead. Building on this late first half momentum, SFU came out strong in the 2
nd, and surged ahead by as many as 11 points. With ten minutes remaining, SFU was up ten at 69 to 59.Â
Â
Simon Fraser continued its strong play throughout the remainder of the second half, leading by as many as 14 down the stretch thanks to clutch shots from
Michael Provenzano. The Seawolves would respond in desperation, closing the lead down to as few as seven, but eventually Simon Fraser would take control and nurse their lead over the finish line for a final score of 91 to 81.
Â
Leading the way for SFU was
Michael Provenzano, who posted 22 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.
Drew Bryson posted a season-high 13 off the bench, while Jas Singh was just a rebound short of a double-double with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
David Penney also posted 9 points and 6 rebounds. Importantly, SFU was dominant on the boards against the Seawolves, out-rebounding them 39 to 22.
Â
Up next, Simon Fraser hosts the University of Alaska (Fairbanks) on Saturday Feb 8
