SFU’s Janes Flips the Script on WWU with Walk-off Win

BURNABY, BC --- The Simon Fraser University Softball team hosted their first home games of the 2020 season with a doubleheader against Western Washington University on Sunday afternoon at Beedie Field.

After splitting a two game set in Bellingham on Friday, Simon Fraser took both home games on Sunday, with 4-2 and 7-5 victories, to move to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC.

In game one, Simon Fraser and WWU were evenly matched through six innings, with each team having scored two runs in the second inning. While both pitchers put in solid overall performances, SFU's Amanda Janes was able to brake things open in the 6th inning, with a two run homer which put the home team ahead, and ultimately proved to be the difference in the contest, as SFU took it 4-2.

In the circle, Anissa Zacharczuk was exceptional once again, going seven strong, surrendering no earned runs, and recording five strikeouts. In addition to Janes' two run shot, Alex Ogg and Hannah Boulanger also picked up RBI's.

In game two of the afternoon, the relatively low scoring theme continued, and Simon Fraser was held scoreless through the first five innings. Down 2-0 in the 6th, Simon Fraser capitalized on two WWU defensive miscues, tying the game at two. These two SFU runs were also split by a brief weather delay, as snowy flurries temporarily postponed the contest.

With SFU back in the game, the Vikings responded with a strong seventh inning, and clutch batting put the visitors back on top at 5-2. Once again facing a deficit, Simon Fraser responded with an offensive explosion in the bottom of the seventh, as a sacrifice fly, followed by a solo home run from Hanna Finkelstein, tied the game once again, this time at five. Following SFU's initial surge, with a full count and one out in the final inning, Amanda Janes played hero for the second time on the day, as she smashed a ball to opposite field well over the outfield fencing, scoring an additional runner and securing walk-off victory for SFU by a final score of 7-5.

For SFU in game two, Amanda Janes and Hanna Finkelstein each had two RBI's, while Alex Ogg recorded 3 hits, scoring once. Up next, SFU hosts Montana State University Billings in a four game set on March 7th and 8th at Beddie Field.
