Simon Fraser Secures Two More Walk-Off Wins

BURNABY, BC --- On Saturday afternoon on Beedie Field, the Simon Fraser University Softball Team secured back to back wins over the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets by final scores of 9-8 and 7-6.

In game one of the two game set, Simon Fraser got off to a good start, and through two innings, SFU found themselves up 5-1. SFU's scoring was highlighted by a two-run homer from Amanda Janes, as well as RBI singles from Chelsea Hotner and Hanna Finkelstein

SFU maintained control throughout most of the game, and it wasn't until the 7th inning that MSUB really got back into the contest. After being down 6-3, a five run 7th inning by the Yellowjackets propelled them to a commanding 8-6 victory, on the strength of a 3 RBI triple by pinch hitter Taylor Anderson.

Not to be deterred, SFU rose to the challenge of a 2-run deficit in the bottom of the 7th. First, Hannah Boulanger hit a 2-run homer which tied the game up at eight, and then Kate Fergusson hit a single which brought Courtney De Adder home, as SFU took the game 9-8 in walk off fashion for the second time in as many weekends. What was particularly impressive about SFU's bottom of the seventh rally was that they brought in all three runners on their final out of the game, after popping up twice early in the inning.

Hannah Boulanger was the top performer for SFU in game one, as she had 3 hits in 4 at-bats, amassing 2 RBI's and 1 run. Anissa Zacharczuk also picked up another win for SFU, as she moved to 9-0 on the year.

Unlike game one, Simon Fraser trailed for most of the second game in the doubleheader, and MSUB was ahead 5-3 in the sixth after home runs from Brittanee Fisher and Payton Reynolds. Once again though, Simon Fraser would be equal to the challenge late on, and after the Yellowjackets took a two run lead to the bottom half of the seventh, SFU came on the charge once again.  Down 6-4, and once again down to their final couple of outs, Hanna Finkelstein singled to score two runners tying the game, and would advance to second following a fielding error from MSUB. Then, on a wild pitch, Finkelstein advanced to third. This left Chelsea Hotner with an opportunity to win the game for SFU, and although her hit would go straight to the pitcher, a throwing error at first led to Finkelstein scoring at home, and SFU took another walk off victory in dramatic fashion, this time by a score of 7-6.

Statistically, SFU was led by Chelsea Hotner & Hanna Finkelstein who each had 3 RBI's. Finkelstein also secured the win as a pitcher, going four innings allowing just 3 earned runs.

Up Next, SFU will be back in action against MSUB at 2 and 4PM at Beedie Field Sunday, March 8th
