NEW YORK – Three players from Simon Fraser University highlight a list of 176 eligible players for the MLS SuperDraft 2021 announced by Major League Soccer today.
Forward
Matteo Polisi, brother
Marcello Polisi, a midfielder, and defender
Chris Guerreiro, all from Coquitlam, are eligible for the draft that is set for Jan. 21 at 11 am (PST).
"We take a lot of pride in our program as a destination for Canadian and international athletes where they can compete for championships and make a jump to the next level," said SFU head coach
Clint Schneider. "The three guys listed for this draft have been in our program, we have worked with them to help develop their skills, and now they are right there on the doorstep to becoming pros."
The MLS designates players eligible for selection in MLS SuperDraft 2021. Regardless of whether any of SFU's student-athletes are drafted or not, all three will be eligible to return to SFU to compete in the 2021 season.
Two players have been selected in the MLS SuperDraft from SFU since the university joined NCAA in 2010. In 2019, senior captain Mamadi Camara was drafted in the second round (46th overall) by the San Jose Earthquakes after finishing his SFU career with 29 goals and 20 assists in 69 games. At the time he was the 14th highest scorer in program history. In 2015, senior captain
Jovan Blagojevic had his name called by the Vancouver Whitecaps during the third round (54
th overall) after finishing his collegiate career with 38 goals in 71 games, 8th on the Clan's all-time goal-scoring list.
"We may have a third player drafted into MLS in the last six years and that is a true testament to where we are in North America as a soccer program," said Schneider. "Certainly, there's no NCAA Division II programs that have been able to replicate the success we've have had."
Matteo Polisi was selected to the United Soccer Coaches' NCAA Division II All-America Second Team in 2019. In three years at SFU, he finished with 36 goals and 18 assists for 90 points in 52 games. He sits tied for 12
th with Blagojevic on the all-time scoring list and tied for 11
th in goals all-time.
Marcello Polisi was GNAC Player of the Year and an All-American as a freshmen, and he was West Region Second Team in 2019. He started all 49 games he played for SFU over three seasons, registering 6 goals and 7 assists as a defensive midfielder.
Chris Guerreiro has played two seasons at SFU appearing in 14 games. During that time SFU has been among the best defensive squads.
