Early goal sinks SFU men's soccer on the road

BURNABY, B.C. -- Despite holding an edge in shots and corner kicks, the Simon Fraser men's soccer team fell 1-0 at Northwest Nazarene (Idaho) Saturday.

SFU is 1-1 after two Great Northwest Athletic Conference contests, and 4-4 overall. The team won at Saint Martin's (Wash.) Thursday.

A 27th-minute own goal proved to be the difference on Saturday in Nampa, Idaho. NNU's Lukas Juodkunaitis sent in a cross from a set piece on the near side and it deflected off an SFU defender and into the net for the only score of the day.

The game ended with SFU ahead 10-8 on shots, and 4-3 on corners. The matchup also featured six yellow cards, with four being assessed to the hosts.

Senior forward Connor Glennon led SFU with four shots, while sophomore midfielder Mark Talisuna recorded three.

SFU had some good opportunities to tie the game in the second half but was just off the mark.

In the 58th minute, sophomore defender Niko Papakyriakopoulos sent a free kick towards the NNU penalty area. The ball eventually bounced to Glennon, who was free on the right side, but he sent his shot high.

Then in the 75th, Glennon dribbled the ball down the middle and fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. It flew just over the crossbar for a narrow miss.

SFU will regroup and begin preparations for its next match, taking place Saturday at Western Washington.
