SFU volleyball sweeps Saint Martin's

BURNABY, B.C. -- The Simon Fraser volleyball team came ready to play Thursday night as it won in three straight sets against the Saint Martin's Saints in Lacey, Washington. 

SFU triumphed in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest by scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 25-14.

The SFU women came out hot in set 1, with Camryn Vosloh serving up two service aces, three kills, and two digs. It was a close game with the teams tied at 13 points apiece, but SFU won five of the next six to create some separation. With the help of three blocks, SFU forced the hosts into 12 attacking errors and kept their hitting percentage to -0.029 in the opening set. 

The intensity picked up in the second set as there were a combined total of 32 kills and only six errors between the two teams. Saint Martin's led 9-8 but SFU replied with a 9-1 run to take control. The surge included three Brooke Dexter kills, a pair from Julia Tays, one kill from Kalyn Hartmann, a Bianca Te service ace and a combination block from Dexter and Hartmann. 

Down 23-19, SMU took a timeout and then won the ensuing point, but SFU's Jocelyn Sherman and Dexter had back-to-back kills to end the set 25-20. Dexter finished the first two sets with a total of nine kills.

It was all Simon Fraser in the third, as Dexter became the first player of the match to hit double-digit kills, and helped lead the team to a 25-14 victory. Hartmann had four kills in the set.

Dexter finished the night with a game-best 12 kills, seven digs, and 13 total points. Hartmann and Sherman contributed seven kills each. Te had 15 digs, while Tays recored 29 assists.

Gracie Brenner led Saint Martin's with nine kills.

SFU had an attacking percentage of .305, compared to SMU's .139.

SFU volleyball improved its record to 9-4 overall, and 3-3 in GNAC competition. The team looks forward to Saturday as it faces the Western Oregon Wolves in an away game, before returning home the following Thursday for Socktoberfest against Montana State-Billings.
