BURNABY, B.C. -- The Simon Fraser women's volleyball team completed a perfect road trip with a 3-0 win at Western Oregon Saturday night in Monmouth, Ore.
While SFU rolled to an easy 25-8 victory in the opening set, the team needed comebacks to claim sets 2 and 3 by identical 25-23 scores. SFU didn't lose a set this week as it also swept Saint Martin's (Wash.) on Thursday.
Against WOU,
Brooke Dexter led SFU with 18 kills – and just one error – on 30 swings for a sizzling hitting percentage of .567. The rookie also had 11 digs.
Kalyn Hartmann,
Hanna Kolof, and
Jocelyn Sherman also chipped in with eight kills each.
Bianca Te had a team-best 17 digs and
Julia Tays directed the offence with 38 assists.
Bailee Hartsook had 10 kills for Western Oregon.
In a dominant opening set, SFU recorded a hitting percentage of .522, compared to WOU's -.037. The visitors had four service aces and a 5-1 edge in blocks.
Two of those aces, from Sherman, capped off a contest-opening 6-1 run that forced the host Wolves to call a timeout. It didn't slow down SFU, however, as the visitors went on a run of seven-consecutive points to go ahead 16-3. Dexter and Kolof provided a pair of kills each in the surge, while Hartmann added a kill, and then came together with Kolof for a block.
WOU responded well in the second set. It looked like the Wolves took control, using a seven-point run to build a 19-14 lead. The squads traded points before a Dexter kill commenced the SFU comeback. She and
Farnaaz Johal teamed up for a block on the next point to cut the WOU advantage to 20-17. SFU won the next two plays to force a timeout by the Wolves at 20-19.
WOU earned the point out of the break but SFU replied by taking the next two to even the score at 21-21. The teams were also tied at 22-22, and 23-23 before a Dexter kill gave SFU a set point. The Wolves then committed an error to hand the visitors the win.

SFU was clutch down the stretch in the third set. A Kiana Pel service ace put Western Oregon up 16-12, but SFU steadily chipped away at the deficit. After a nice dig by Te, Dexter tipped a ball down for a kill to level the score at 18-18. The Wolves rallied to go ahead 21-19, before SFU won six of the next eight points to clinch the contest.
A Dexter kill cut the gap to 21-20. Her service ace gave SFU two match points at 24-22. The Wolves saved one but Hartmann wiped her attack off the block on the next point for the triumph.
SFU improved to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in GNAC play. The team is back at the West Gym next weekend, as it hosts Socktoberfest on Thursday against Montana State-Billings at 7 p.m. Seattle Pacific will then come to Burnaby Mountain for a Saturday contest at 4 p.m.
