OAKLAND, Calif. – The Simon Fraser women's basketball team lost 83-68 to San Francisco State Friday in the opening game of the Holy Names Classic in Oakland, California.

Sophomore guard/forward
Jessica Wisotzki led SFU with 13 points. All four of her rebounds were on the offensive end. As a team, SFU recorded 29 rebounds, and held the Gators to just 11.

In her first career start, freshman guard
Makenna Gardner posted 10 points and grabbed six rebounds. She was perfect on all four shots from the field, and two attempts from the foul line. Freshman forward
Gemma Cutler came off the bench to contribute 12 points.

San Francisco St. led 20-16 after the opening quarter. Gardner's three-point basket at 7:48 gave SFU its only lead of the game at 3-2. But the Gators scored the next 13 points to go ahead by double digits. SFU replied with a 13-5 surge to cut the deficit to just two possessions. The team got four points each from Cutler and Gardner in that quarter-finishing run.

Junior guard
Georgia Swant tied the game at 23-23 in the second quarter with a successful triple with 8:35 left in the half. SFSU had a 10-2 reply. Neither side could move the gap substantially after that, as the Gators took a 46-36 advantage into halftime.

San Francisco St. opened the third with an 11-2 run to go up by 19 points (57-38). SFU scored the next seven points, with buckets from junior guard/forward
Sophie Klassen, Cutler, and Gardner (after a steal from sophomore guard
Grace Killins). Cutler also added a free throw to make it 57-45. The Gators slowed SFU's momentum to lead 65-49 going into the final quarter.

Junior guard
Emma Kramer's layup with 6:30 left in regulation cut SFU's deficit to 68-58 but that was as close as the team got, despite outscoring SFSU 19-18 in the fourth quarter.

SFU shot 42.9 per cent from the field, making 24 of its 56 attempts. The Gators had a 53.4 shooting percentage, and were successful on 52 per cent of their tries from beyond the three-point line (13-25).

SFU committed just 11 fouls, compared to 24 for San Francisco St., and made 16 of 25 free throw chances.

The team (1-3) will face host Holy Names (Calif.) Saturday at 2 p.m.
