BURNABY – SFU welcomed over 100 wrestlers from across Canada for the return of the SFU Open and SFU wrestlers Karla Godinez-Gonzalez and Taniela Feliciano-Takafua won their weight classes while eight others placed second Saturday afternoon in the Central Gym.
 
Saturday was really a celebration of wrestling as SFU welcomed well over 100 male and female wrestlers back to the mats for competition this weekend, many for the their first competitive matches in 21 months due to the global pandemic.
 
Godinez-Gonzalez, the top-ranked wrestler in NCAA, won four straight matches by technical fall to claim the 53-kilogram weight class for the NCAA No. 4 ranked SFU women's team. While no other female wrestlers won their weight classes, Golrokh Nouri (50-kg), Emily Cue (76-kg), Julia Ritchey (90-kg), and Clara Scaglione (62-kg) all placed second.
 
With just four wrestlers in the 125-kg weight class Feliciano-Takafua needed to win just two matches to claim the weight and teammate Raphael Masella went 1-1 to place second. Randy McDonald (65), Zach Stratton (79) and Karanpreet Gill (92) also placed second
