Brody Thomas nets winner with 90 seconds left

LACEY, Wash. – Brody Thomas scored with 90 seconds left to give No. 18 ranked SFU a 1-0 win over Chico State in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon in Lacey, Wash.

It was SFU's third straight win—all on the road—after opening the season with an overtime loss. SFU moved to No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll after starting the season unranked.

Thomas scored with 1:26 remaining in regulation on SFU's first shot on target all afternoon. Their first and only shot on goal was the match winner. Connor Glennon set-up the winner. He now has four points in his first two games.

The goal came after a Chico State defender headed a ball lofted from distance into the backline and the clearing went into space. Glennon raced onto the ball, deked one defender with a back heel, causing him to fall and opening a swath of space. Glennon dribble to the top of the 18 before passing to Thomas. He took two touches and then struck a ball that curled past the diving keeper and off the far post into the goal, stunning the Wildcats.

All nine of Simon Fraser's shots came in the second half, the first shot coming at the 60:38 mark. Chico State, meanwhile, fired off 17 shots, seven of which were saved by SFU keeper Aiden Bain, who played a magnificent match.

Bain pushed Juan Perez's rocket toward the near upper-V over the bar in the 44th minute. He deflected Jacob Chong's low screamer toward the near post in the 64th minute. He dove to his left to parry away Liam Duerksen's promising try and then watched as another Duerksen attempt slipped just wide in the 68th minute following the rebound.

Simon Fraser is now 3-1-0. It plays Colorado Mesa in Wichita Falls, Texas on Sept. 16. SFU's first home game at the new SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field is Oct. 14 against Montana State Billings at 7PM.

Chico State is 1-3-0.
