BURNABY, B.C. -- The SFU men's soccer team, ranked 19th in NCAA Div. 2, fell 3-0 to the host squad Saturday at the Midwestern State University Classic in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Midwestern State, ranked one spot ahead of SFU, led 1-0 at the half before adding two late goals to earn the win. The Mustangs improved to 6-0, while SFU fell to 3-3.
The hosts started the match strong with a Toi Yamaoka goal in the ninth minute of play. For the rest of the opening half, both teams practised tough defence. MSU recorded six shots in the first half and SFU had three. Goalkeepers
Aidan Bain of SFU and MSU's Marc-Antoine Huzen each registered a save.
Mere Escobar doubled the home side's lead with a penalty-kick goal in the 77th minute before Julian Barajas converted on a rebound opportunity in the 89th.
The Mustangs had a 14-4 advantage in shots.
Connor Glennon had two shots (one on target) to lead Simon Fraser. Bain ended the match with five saves.
Saturday's match was SFU's last non-conference game of 2021. The team has a bye week before the start of Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Thursday, Sept. 30 at Saint Martin's in Lacey, Wash. SFU will then visit Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho, on Saturday, Oct. 2.
