SFU rolls on with third straight win over West Region rivals

SAN DIEGO – Simon Fraser won its third straight match to start the season taking out Cal State LA in a five-set battle against another top NCAA Division II West Region opponent Friday afternoon at the Point Loma Seaside Invitational.
 
Simon Fraser took out the Golden Eagles 24-26, 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-6.
 
Brooke Dexter had a match-high 20 kills to lead Simon Fraser (3-0), which has enjoyed a tremendous run in Point Loma's Seasider Invitational so far. Simon Fraser has posted a three-set win over Azusa Pacific, a four-set win over defending national champion Cal State San Bernardino and the five-set win over Cal State LA on Friday. All three opponents were 2019 NCAA Tournament participants.
 
Dexter has 61 kills in 12 sets so far in the tournament and against the Golden Eagles hit at a .340 clip, going 20-of-50. Camryn Volosh had 15 kills on 35 attempts.
 
Simon Fraser had a 63-57 advantage in kills and a 9-6 edge in blocks. Simon Fraser also had a narrow 75-71 edge in digs.
 
SFU dropped the first two sets but regained its momentum winning the third and fourth sets. SFU took leads of 4-1, 7-2 and 9-3 in the final set and never looked back, winning 15-6. SFU had a 12-2 advantage in kills in the final set, led by Dexter with four. SFU converted 12 of 19 attacks with senior Julia Tays setting up 9 kills in the final frame.
 
Tayes finished with 104 assists in two matches Friday, posting 53 assists in the evening match.
 
Five SFU players reached double-digits in digs, led by senior Bianca Te with 19.
 
SFU will stay in San Diego for one more game tomorrow against tournament host Point Loma.
