Kayla Goncalves scores in 1-1 draw against MSU Denver

DENVER – SFU's Kayla Goncalves scored her second collegiate goal but it wasn't enough as MSU Denver scored six minutes later to draw even and the two teams played to a 1-1 tie Saturday in a non-conference women's soccer.

Simon Fraser scored first, in the 37th minute. The MSU goalkeeper managed a save off a deflection but Goncalves knocked a put-back into the open net to give SFU its first goal in two games to start this season. Danae Robillard took the original shot and drew the assist.

Jaimy Sawaged replied just over six minutes later for the Roadrunners, breaking in alone on the right side of field and beating SFU goalkeeper Kelsey Fisher with a high shot that deflected off the crossbar and into the goal. Fisher, starting her second straight game, played all 110 minutes and made 5 saves. She faced 13 shots.

"Simon Fraser did a really good job of keeping the ball," first-year MSU Denver coach Kat Mertz said. SFU likes to possess and build …. and I thought Simon Fraser did a really good job and kind of confused us a little bit."

SFU was sound defensively throughout the match. MSU Denver continued pushing after the goal, outshooting Simon Fraser 11-6 after the first half.

SFU directed 10 shots toward the Roadrunners goal with six on target. Robillard had two of those chances.

SFU will play at home on Sept. 11 at the new SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field against University of Fraser Valley. Game time is 7PM.
