SFU women's basketball earns big road win at Western Oregon

BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser women's basketball team used a 9-3 run late in the fourth quarter to break a 51-51 tie and beat the Western Oregon Wolves Thursday night. The final score in Monmouth was 62-59 in favour of Canada's NCAA team, which improved to 6-9 overall, and 2-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference games.

SFU rebounded from Tuesday's 72-60 home loss to Central Washington. Thursday's result also completed the season sweep of WOU after SFU beat the Wolves 84-71 on New Year's Day in Burnaby.

Senior guard Jessica Jones recorded 14 points, six rebounds, and three steals for the victors. Gemma Cutler went 6-for-10 from the field to score 12 points. The freshman forward also grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore guard/forward Jessica Wisotzki had 11 points.

Junior guard Georgia Swant had an impact all over the floor with nine points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Junior guard/forward Sophie Klassen led all players in the contest with nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

Meadow Aragon scored 17 points and blocked five shots to lead Western Oregon.

The teams were tied 51-51 halfway through the fourth quarter. Cutler's offensive rebound and put-back layup gave SFU the 53-51 edge with 4:17 remaining. Jessica Wisotzki then nailed an open three-point shot from the right wing to make it 56-51.

After WOU went 1 of 2 at the foul line, Cutler converted a clutch jumper inside the three-point arc with two and a half minutes on the clock to open up a 58-52 advantage. The Wolves answered with a Madisyn Clark layup. After a defensive stop, WOU took the ball up the court in transition but an off-target pass went out of bounds at 1:04. SFU exploited the error, and Cutler restored the six-point lead, 60-54, with a layup.

That was enough for the visitors to leave with the win, despite a Tresai McCarver triple for the Wolves that cut their deficit to 61-59 with 11 seconds on the clock. SFU went 1 of 2 at the foul line on the next possession, leaving the home side a chance to tie the contest. The Wolves hoisted a pair of three-point shots in the final seconds but neither was on target. The last was blocked by Klassen, who clinched the 62-59 triumph for her squad.

Western Oregon led 7-5 early in the opening quarter but SFU fought back with nine-consecutive points, including five from Swant. From there, the visitors stretched the gap to double digits for the first time, 20-10, on a Jones jumper with 2:30 left in the first. Sophomore guard Grace Killins added a free throw to make it 21-10. A Klassen basket in the final minute rounded out the scoring with SFU in front 23-12.

WOU cut the deficit to five points, 23-18, within the first couple of minutes of the second quarter. It was all SFU over the next four minutes or so, as the team put together an 11-3 run, to jump ahead 34-21. Jones started the surge with a pair of baskets. Jessica Wisotzki followed that up with a long-distance shot before Cutler capped things off with a pair of buckets with about five minutes left before the end of the period.

The Wolves were able to shave their 36-25 halftime deficit to just 38-34 in the early stages of the third quarter. Freshman guard Makenna Gardner's jumper pushed SFU's lead back into double digits, 44-34. Her next basket made it 46-36 with 2:41 before the start of the final period.

Over the next 7:05 in a surge that bridged the third and fourth quarters, WOU outscored SFU 15-5 to tie the matchup.
