NAMPA, Idaho – Northwest Nazarene scored the game-winning goal in the 84
th minute to hand Simon Fraser men's soccer a 2-1 defeat Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.
Lukas Juodkunaitis scored on a 25-yard free kick from above the left corner of the box that he sent curving towards the SFU goal. The movement on the ball was too much for Red Leafs goalie
Justyn Sandhu to handle as it dipped and snuck past him for the game-winning goal.
The loss dropped SFU to 6-4-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the GNAC. The Nighthawks improve to 8-2-1 overall and the win vaulted them to the top of the GNAC standings with a 4-1-0 record.
Simon Fraser scored the first goal of the match in the 12th minute. An SFU player cut through the penalty area and closed on the goal. NNU goalkeeper Sawyer Price was able to fend off the Red Leafs initial shot but a deflection rebounded to
Devin O'Hea on the right side, who tapped the ball into the unguarded net from five yards.
It was O'Hea's fifth goal of the season. O'Hea has scored in two straight games and he has three goals in five games. He is second in the conference with five tallies.
The Nighthawks were able to keep constant pressure on the Red Leafs with eight shots in the first half. NNU was able to tie the score 1-1 in the 24th minute. Ethan Atterberry was racing defenders down the middle of the field, and he dished the ball off to
Alan Soto Ortiz. His cross in front of the Red Leafs goal was headed home by Jake Levine.
That set the stage for the Lukas Juodkunaitis game-winner.
NNU out-shot SFU 18-4 with Sandhu making eight saves in the game.
The Red Leafs men's soccer team returns home for Red Night, a game Saturday, Oct. 15 against Western Oregon where 300 fans will receive Red Leaf scarves at the game. Game time is 7 p.m. at SFU Stadium.
