Camryn Vosloh returns to court but Red Leafs fall to Falcons in 4 sets

SEATTLE – The SFU Red Leafs volleyball team had a tough result in its second-to-last match of the season, losing 3-1 to Seattle Pacific Falcons Thursday evening in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action at Royal Brougham Pavilion.
 
The Red Leafs lost the opening set, took the second set, and then lost sets three and four by two points each. Set scores were 14-25, 25-23, 24-26, 23-25.
 
SFU had a chance to extend the match to a fifth set, but was unable to hold onto a 21-17 lead in the final frame.
 
Outside hitter Camryn Vosloh returned from injury to play for the first time in more than a month and had nine kills, 12 digs and three blocks.
 
SFU got double-digit kills from Jocelyn Sherman (12) and Sophie Lachapelle (11) while Eva Person had a double-double with 28 set assists and 19 digs. Person is fifth in the GNAC with 5.85 assists per set.
 
Seattle Pacific had a 49-46 edge in kills and hit at a .160 percentage to .103 for the Red Leafs. The Falcons also had eight service aces compared to three for the Red Leafs. SFU held a 16-13 edge in blocks, led by Miriam Jauhiainen (9), Sherman (6), and Abby Willett (6). The Red Leafs are ranked 49th in Division II with 219 total blocks.
 
SFU struggled in the first set but rebounded to make the second, third and fourth sets close. The Red Leafs and Falcons were tied 3-3 in set two but SFU took the lead and then never trailed, although the Falcons pulled to within one, 24-23. A kill by Lachapelle assisted by Serena Gentile sealed the win.
 
SFU held a 22-19 lead in set three before SPU went on a 5-0 run to take a 24-22 lead. Kills by Sherman and Brooke Dexter pulled the Red Leafs even but the Falcons took the next two points and the set win. After trailing 21-17 in set four, the Falcons rallied to tie the set, 23-23, and then won the final two points and the match.
 
Simon Fraser, 12-14 overall and 9-8 in the GNAC, will conclude the 2022 season Saturday at Montana State Billings, a noon (PT) start.
