LANGLEY, BC –
Alan Soto scored his sixth goal of the season minutes into the game and that stood as the winner as the No. 25 ranked SFU Red Leafs defeated Saint Martin's Saints 1-0 in a game that was finally played Sunday morning at Yorkson Community Park in Langley.
The men's soccer team will now wait to see if their 11-5-1 record, No. 25 national ranking and No. 7 ranking in Super Region 4 is enough to get an invitation to the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship tournament. The NCAA Division II selection show to determine the field and bracket for men's soccer will be streamed on NCAA.com beginning Monday, Nov. 7 at 3:30 p.m. PT.
The Red Leafs took care of business Sunday early morning. Midfielder Al Zohar laid a pass down the right wing that senior
Conrad Cheng ran onto and after a nifty move to get past a defender crossed the ball low into the penalty area. Soto worked himself open and he fired low with his left foot past a diving Nick Mueller guarding the goal at the 3:39. The goal was Soto's sixth of the season. He shares the team lead with
Devin O'Hea.
Soto was SFU's most dangerous forward with seven shots on goal. Goalkeeper Mueller made 10 saves as SFU directed 24 shots at the Saints goal.
O'Hea had a good chance to score early in the second half on a scrambled that generated three chances. The first SFU shot was blocked and O'Hea sent the careem off the cross bar from in close. He managed to get the ball back but his second shot was stopped by Mueller.
Sunday's game had been originally scheduled for Saturday evening but was moved to Sunday morning to provide SFU players rest and recovery from a Friday evening match. After snow fell on Burnaby Mountain through the night and early morning Sunday, the game was moved from SFU Stadium to Langley.
Justyn Sandhu made four saves to record his fifth shutout of the season. The Saints most dangerous chance came in the 88
th minute when forward Angel Alvarado-Fajardo was left all alone 22-yards out and he struck a low powerful shot that sailed left of the target.
