Red Leafs comeback stalls in final minutes, lose to Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team built a large first-half lead and held off a Simon Fraser charge to defeat the Red Leafs 79-67 Saturday at New PE Building.

Simon Fraser will be looking for its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference win when it returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 7 in the West Gym against Seattle Pacific (7 p.m. tip-off).   Fans can receive a free 'Back to School Haircut' by a stylist from Azzi Hair Salon courtside at the game. It's the first of two straight home contests to start the new year. On Saturday, Jan. 7 against Montana State Billings fans can participate in a $500 Paper Airplane Contest at halftime.

The Wolves (5-6 overall, 2-2 GNAC) led by as many as 18 points in the first half and held a 45-32 lead at the break on SFU (5-8, 0-3) thanks to shooting 60.6 percent from the field, including 5-for-9 from 3-point range.

But the Red Leafs didn't go away. They cut the lead to a one possession game at 56-54 with 11:07 left and kept it close the rest of the way. WOU never allowed SFU to take the lead, however. The score was 66-65 with under four minutes left when WOU's Jahville Collins drained a 3-pointer to make it a four-point game.

SFU wouldn't get within a possession of the Wolves the rest of the game as WOU ended the game on a 13-2 run. SFU scored just one field goal in the final 3:40.

Three Red Leafs finished in double figures scoring with David Penney leading the way with 17-points on 8-of-12 field goal shooting. He also dished three assists, had five steals and grabbed three rebounds in 33 minutes. Elliot Dimaculangan was 4-of-6 on threes and finished with 15 points, three steals and two rebounds. Nigel Hylton scored 11-points on 5-of-9 shooting.

High scorer for the Wolves with 15 points was Jahville Collins, one of five players in double figures.

Western Oregon shot 57.4 percent from the field, connecting on 31-of-54 field goals, and out-rebounded the Red Leafs 36 to 25.
