Top seeds Godinez-Gonzalez, Hedrick lead No. 3 SFU into nationals

MANHEIM, PA – SFU is ranked No. 3 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) final rankings with Karla Godinez-Gonzalez and Alex Hedrick ranked No. 1 in their weight classes leading into the NCWWC National Championships on March 4-5.  
 
The individual rankings will serve as the seeds for the national tournament.
 
SFU dominated the field at the NCWWC Northwest Regional Championship, winning six of the 10 weight classes and qualifying 11 athletes for the national championships.
 
King University remains on top of the poll, with McKendree University coming in second. King is ranked first in the poll, with 13 individuals ranked. McKendree has the most ranked individuals with 14 and is second. Both King and McKendree have three individuals ranked No. 1. North Central College has 10 individuals ranked and as a team are ranked fourth. Colorado Mesa University rounds out the top five with seven individuals ranked.
 
Simon Fraser's Karla Godinez-Gonzalez moves down to the top spot at 116 pounds after wrestling all season at higher weights. Teammate Alex Hedrick enters the rankings as the top seed at 123-pounds after winning a regional title. Both Hedrick and Godinez-Gonzalez were national champs in 2020. SFU did not compete in 2021.

SFU freshman Maddie Mackenzie takes the fourth seed at 101-pounds after winning the regional title. Senior Alexia Seal slots in at No. 3 at 109-pounds and Lauren Mason is ranked No. 3 at 130 after winning a regional title. Seal was an All-American in 2019 but missed the 2020 campaign with an injury. Mason picked up a pair of bronze medals at nationals in 2019 and 2020.
 
SFU does not have any ranked wrestlers in the 136 and 143 weight classes. At 155, Alyvia Fiske is No. 2, at 170, Emily Cue is No. 3 and at 191, Katja Osteen is No. 5. Fiske and Osteen were regional champs. Fiske has placed third at nationals twice and is a former US Open champ. 
 
Winning Regional titles for SFU were Maddie MacKenzie (101), Karla Godinez-Gonzalez (116), Alex Hedrick (123), Lauren Mason (130), Alyvia Fiske (155) and Katja Osteen (191). Placing second were Alexia Seal (109), and Emily Cue (170). Also competing at nationals are unranked Marquesis Haintz (130), Clara Scaglioni (143) and Julia Richey (191).
 
The NCWWC National Championships will take place on March 4-5 at Adrian College in Adrian, MI.
 
There were four regional championships and No. 1 ranked King University dominated the field at the Southeast Regional, winning nine of the 10 weight classes and qualifying 14 wrestlers for the national championships. No. 2 McKendree University qualified 15 of its wrestlers for nationals and won the Southwest Regional team title. Led by two individual champions and 10 national qualifiers, No. 7 Tiffin defended its NCWWC Northeast Regional title.
