BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser softball lost 11-9 and 9-0 Saturday at Saint Martin's in Lacey, Washington.
The teams had the longest winning streaks in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference coming into this weekend's four-game series. After beating Western Oregon four times at home last weekend, SFU was named the GNAC's Team of the Week. SMU has now claimed eight contests in a row with today's results. SFU (9-8, 4-2 GNAC) suffered its first losses in league play.
GAME 1 | Saint Martin's 11, Simon Fraser 9
SFU came back from 4-0 and 7-4 deficits, but the hosts ultimately prevailed 11-9.
The Saints opened the scoring with four first-inning runs.
SFU did the same in the second. With two outs, junior
Alex Ogg hit a clutch two-RBI single to left field to bring home sophomore
Rebecca Kirkpatrick and junior
Hannah Boulanger. That hit cut the SFU deficit in half. Junior
Hanna Finkelstein then drew a walk to extend the inning for junior
Chelsea Hotner. She came up to the plate and knocked a single up the middle to score both Ogg sisters, Alex and Georgia, and tie the game 4-4.
Saint Martin's re-took the lead in the bottom of the second with three more runs.
SFU evened the score at 7-7 in the fourth. Finkelstein drove a double into right field to plate a pair of runs (Alex and
Georgia Ogg), before she scored herself later in the inning to tie the game on a left-field single by freshman
Janique Balcaen.

The Saints answered back with a pair of runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 11-7 advantage.
A final SFU comeback attempt fell short in the seventh despite a couple of runs.
Freshman
Abby McGlynn delivered a two-out, pinch-hit single up the middle to score Kirkpatrick. On the same play,
Georgia Ogg moved from second to third, and then touched home plate on a throwing error. However, SMU relief pitcher Kylie Parsons induced a groundout on the next play to clinch the triumph.
Alex Ogg led SFU with three hits in five at-bats. She stole two bases and drove in a pair of runs as did Finkelstein and Hotner.
Georgia Ogg scored three times.
GAME 2 | Saint Martin's 9, Simon Fraser 0 (5 inn.)
SFU trailed 2-0 but the Saints exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to complete the Saturday sweep. Saint Martin's recorded four doubles and a triple in the inning.
Finkelstein, Hotner, and Kirkpatrick had SFU's hits in Game 2. Finkelstein broke up SMU pitcher Chloe Leverington's no-hit bid in the top of the fourth with a one-out single. Hotner followed with another single, but the team couldn't bring a run across.
The two squads will play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 12 noon. SFU's next home series will be April 9-10 against Western Washington.
