SFU softball falls in Saturday doubleheader in Ellensburg

BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser softball team dropped both ends of its Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday at Central Washington in Ellensburg. The host Wildcats (11-14, 5-5 GNAC) won 11-3 in Game 1 and then beat Simon Fraser (9-12, 4-6 GNAC) 9-8 to end the day.
 
Junior Hanna Finkelstein drove in five runs over the two games to lead SFU, while junior Alex Ogg had three hits in six at-bats.

Central Washington posted eight unanswered runs to break a 3-3 tie and win the series opener.
 
Freshman Janique Balcaen drove in the game's first run in the opening inning by knocking an RBI single to center field to score Alex Ogg. CWU replied with three runs in the home half of the first.
 
Finkelstein evened the score at 3-3 in the second with a two-out, two-RBI double to right field. Sophomores Georgia Ogg and Megan Duclos scored the runs.
 
The Wildcats went back in front 4-3 after their turn at bat in the second. They added four scores in the fourth inning, and three in the fifth to clinch the win.
 
Balcaen, junior Hannah Boulanger, and Finkelstein had the Game 1 hits for SFU.

GAME 2 | Central Washington 9, Simon Fraser 8
The hosts earned the sweep by claiming a wild second contest on Frederick Field.

Myiah Seaton hit a walk-off RBI single to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning to give CWU the 9-8 victory.
 
In a back-and-forth contest, SFU led 4-0 in the fourth inning, and trailed 8-4 in the fifth, before rallying to tie the score at 8-8 going into the home half of the seventh.
 
Duclos put SFU up 2-0 with a two-out double to left center to plate sophomore Rebecca Kirkpatrick and Georgia Ogg. Alex Ogg kept the inning going with an infield single to bring up Finkelstein. She knocked a single to center to score Duclos, and stretch SFU's advantage to 3-0.
 
In the top of the fourth inning, Boulanger hit a single to right field to bring Alex Ogg across for the visiting team's fourth run.
 
CWU recorded three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Then the Wildcats added another five in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead. The biggest CWU blows in the fifth were an Allie Thiessen double and an Alyssa Benthagen home run. Both hits plated two runs.
 
Freshman Caitlin Zagari drove in a sixth-inning run on a single down the line into left field. Junior Chelsea Hotner touched home plate to cut SFU's deficit to 8-5.
 
In the top of the seventh, Kirkpatrick scored on an Alex Ogg RBI groundout to get SFU to within a couple of runs, 8-6, with one out. The next batter, Finkelstein, then forced a full count before sending a double to right center for a pair of runs that tied the game at 8-8
 
Alex Ogg went 3-for-5 batting, while Finkelstein drove in three runs. She also had two hits as did Boulanger, Kirkpatrick and Georgia Ogg.

The teams will play another two games Sunday, starting at 1 p.m.
