BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser sits in third place in the team standings after the opening day of the National College Women's Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC) National Championships in Adrian, Michigan. SFU scored 119 points today, and trails only McKendree (Ill.) with 158 and King (Tenn.), which tallied 132.5 points.
Three SFU wrestlers qualified for their weight division final, and eight in total have achieved All-America status.
At 116 pounds, top seed
Karla Godinez-Gonzalez got a bye in the first round before winning by technical fall in her next two bouts. In the semifinal, the senior earned a 6-2 decision over King's Sage Mortimer. Godinez-Gonzalez won the 116-pound title in 2020. SFU did not compete at the 2021 national meet.
Tomorrow, she will face 2021 titlist Felicity Taylor of McKendree for top spot.
Senior
Alex Hedrick will be a four-time national championship finalist at 123 pounds. The top seed clinched her spot in tomorrow's final match after getting a bye and then two technical fall victories. She won a 9-2 decision over Amani Jones of North Central (Ill.) in the semifinal round.
Hedrick is the 2020 champion. Her opponent Saturday, Cheyenne Sisenstein of King, was first in 2021.
Senior
Alyvia Fiske opened with a bye and two wins via technical fall in the 155-pound division. She then defeated Marlynne Deede of Augsburg (Minn.) by decision (3-0) to make the event final. She was third at the 2020 NCWWC National Championships.
Fiske will wrestle McKendree's Kayla Marano for gold on Saturday. Marano was second in 2021 while representing Emmanuel (Ga.)
