Alyvia Fiske, Karla Godinez-Gonzalez and Alex Hedrick win individual titles, SFU third at NCWWC National Championships

BURNABY, B.C. – Three Simon Fraser athletes won individual titles Saturday, helping the team take third place at the National College Women's Wrestling Coalition (NCWWC) National Championships in Adrian, Michigan.
 
Karla Godinez-Gonzalez (116 pounds) and Alex Hedrick (123) won their respective weight classes to earn their second career national titles, while Alyvia Fiske bested the field in the 155-pound category for her first NCWWC championship. All three are seniors.
 
Senior Lauren Mason (130) and junior Emily Cue (170) earned bronze medals and eight SFU wrestlers in total captured All-America honours.
 
SFU had 145.5 points in the team standings, behind McKendree (Ill.) (188) and King (Tenn.) (166). The team returned to the NCWWC National Championships after not participating last season.
 
In a battle of the last two NCWWC champions at 116 pounds, 2020 titlist and top-seeded Godinez-Gonzalez scored a 3-1 decision over McKendree's Felicity Taylor.

In her fourth career national final, Hedrick, the 2020 winner at 123 pounds, pinned her opponent Cheyenne Sisenstein of King at five minutes 49 seconds. Hedrick was the top seed coming into the event, while Sisenstein was the defending champion.
 
No. 2 seed Fiske defeated McKendree's Kayla Marano in the 155-pound final. She earned a 3-2 decision to win her first collegiate title. Fiske was third in 2020 while Marano was second last year.
 
Both Fiske and Hedrick qualified for USA Wrestling's 2022 Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

Senior Lauren Mason (130) won her consolation semifinal 8-6 over Colorado Mesa's Claire DiCugno and then beat Mia Macaluso of East Stroudsburg (Pa.) by technical fall to capture third place. She finishes her career with four All-America placings.
 
Junior Emily Cue (170) pinned Jade Herzer (Wisconsin-Stevens Point) in their consolation semifinal and defeated Grace Kristoff of McKendree by decision, 4-1, to win bronze.
 
Freshman Maddie MacKenzie (101), senior Alexia Seal (109), and freshman Katja Osteen (191) all placed sixth to earn All-America status.
