Soto scores again but men’s soccer falls 3-1 to No. 18 ranked Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo — The SFU men's soccer team's three-game win and shutout streak was snapped by No. 18 ranked Colorado Mesa Saturday evening when the Red Leafs lost 3-1 to the Mavericks in an NCAA Division II non-conference game played at Community Hospital Unity Field.

SFU had rolled to three straight shutout victories but surrendered a two-goal lead to the Mavericks and then couldn't complete the comeback. Trailing 2-0 in the second half, Alan Soto scored his second goal in as many games when he found net in the 60th minute. But any SFU hopes of a comeback were dashed when the Mavericks scored their third goal 24 minutes later.

Soto, a senior transfer from Santa Clara University, scored the historic first goal for SFU as the Red Leafs in a 1-0 win Thursday over Fort Lewis.

Colorado Mesa opened the scoring in the 26th minute to end SFU goalkeeper Justyn Sandhu's shutout streak at 326 consecutive minutes when Daisuke Takanaka went bottom right on a penalty kick. SFU's Matt Hobson was called for the foul that sent Takanaka to the PK.

The Mavericks opened the second half with a goal four minutes in when Manuel Casas made it 2-0. Soto got that one back 12 minutes later as the Red Leafs fired seven second-half shots at the Mavericks.

SFU pressed for the equalizer but Casas scored his second of the contest in the 84th minute.

Colorado Mesa out shot SFU 21-9. Sandhu made eight saves.

SFU is No. 6 in the United Coaches West Region Ranking.

SFU opens its conference schedule at Montana State Billings on Sept. 22 and plays its GNAC home opener on Sept. 29 at SFU Stadium. Men's soccer season tickets are on sale now for $59.50 here
