BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser women's soccer team fell 1-0 on a 20th-minute goal to visiting Seattle Pacific Thursday night in Burnaby, B.C.
The Red Leafs outshot the Falcons 8-7 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference matchup, and both schools had four shots hit the net. Sophomore midfielder
Kate Cartier had four shots to lead Canada's NCAA team.
Chloe Gellhaus of SPU (6-2-1, 4-1-0 GNAC) knocked a bouncing cross at the top left corner of the six-yard box over freshman goalkeeper
Sarah Loewen for the only goal of the game.
With six and a half minutes left before halftime, Loewen kept the SFU deficit at 1-0 with nice save. She went right to deal with an anticipated deflection before quickly changing direction to stop the bouncing shot when the goal-mouth tip didn't happen.
The Red Leafs (1-4-4, 0-3-2 GNAC) pushed for an equalizing score late, firing three shots at the Falcons' net in the final eight minutes. However, an 82nd-minute attempt by Cartier was saved, while two succeeding chances by rookie forward
Kaylese Callender went wide.
