Game Recap: Soccer - M |

Goal surrendered 38 seconds into second half seals SFU’s fate

BURNABY — SFU men's soccer gave up a goal 38 seconds into the second half and lost 1-0 to Seattle Pacific in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game played in front of 307 fans at SFU Stadium Thursday evening.

Alden Massey came off the wing, split two SFU defenders with a nifty move and then sent a sharp angle shot low to the far side past Justyn Sandhu for the only goal. The Falcons came off the bench to swarm Massey and then managed the clock the rest of the way for the win.

The loss dropped the Red Leafs to 1-1-0 in conference play and 4-3-0 overall. SPU 2-0-1 in the GNAC and 3-3-4 overall. SFU fired off 11 shots and had nine corner kicks.

SFU's Sandhu made two saves against 12 shots in net. He ranks first in GNAC and 12th in Division II with a .857 save percentage.

The game was one of three taking place on Burnaby Mountain Thursday as part of Simon Fraser varsity athletics' Truth and Reconciliation Night. World champion hoop dancer Alex Wells performed, with singing and drumming by his nephew Frances James Jr. Traditional Indigenous food prepared by Mama Bear was sold at the contests. Thursday's recognition was driven by the SFU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), in consultation with the SFU First Nations, Métis & Inuit Student Association. SAAC raffled prizes at the games with proceeds going to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.
